Skills Upgrading Scheme to launch in the second quarter of 2003

Readers will recall that, in the July 2002 issue of Milestone, it was reported that estate agency had been included as one of the industries to benefit from the Skills Upgrading Scheme administered by the Education and Manpower Bureau. After several months of hard work the Working Party comprising representatives of the EAA, the trade, and the institutions of tertiary and vocational education has come up with 11 areas in which training activities will be provided. It is learnt that funding has also been obtained from the Steering Committee of the Scheme and that invitations are now being extended to the educational institutions to develop the courses. The major part of the funding for such courses will be provided by the government and course participants are expected to meet about 30% of the cost. Participants in the courses will be assessed by means of assignments and/or tests and certificates will be awarded upon successful passing of these assessments.

Registration for the courses will begin in the second quarter of 2003 and the courses will hopefully commence in April. Please watch the EAA website for details.

In its effort to enhance the professional knowledge of practitioners the EAA is also planning to introduce a continuing professional development (CPD) element to its training activities. CPD is now a requirement among most professions and its purpose is to help practitioners seek training that would upgrade and update their professional knowledge and skills in a structured and disciplined manner, through the acquisition of credits. The CPD scheme of the EAA, which is now being developed, will initially be administered on a voluntary basis, and licensees are expected to participate according to their interests and resources. It is anticipated that successful completion of specified courses under the government's Skills Upgrading Scheme will be accredited for CPD purposes by the EAA and more details on the mechanism involved will be announced on the EAA Website.
